4 【花・華】 〔花に似て華やかなもの〕 a shining example 《of…》; the flower [pride, pearl, pick, glory] 《of…》.

●武士道の華 the flower of bushidō [chivalry].

●彼女には言うに言われぬ華がある. She just has a certain something about her (that is very appealing).

花のお江戸 the fine [resplendent] city of Edo

●火事とけんかは江戸の華. Fires and quarrels were salient among the Edo entertainments.

・陸上競技の華とも言うべきマラソンは大会最終日に行われます. The marathon, the centerpiece of track and field, is held on the last day of the meet.

5 【花】 〔女性のたとえ〕 a fair [lovely] woman.

●主(あるじ)ある花 a married beauty

・社交界の花 a prominent society woman; the belle of society

・職場の花 the flower [belle] of the workplace [office, factory floor]

・壁の花 〔舞踏会で取り残された〕 a wallflower

・高嶺(たかね)の花 ⇒たかね3

・両手に花 with a beauty on either arm.

6 【花】 〔最上の時〕 best days [times].

●人生の花 the flower of life [youth]; the golden season of life; the springtime of life

・ひと花咲かせる make a splash; do something to make the world sit up and take notice; make a name for oneself.

●彼女はあたら盛りの花を散らした. She was cut off in the flower of her prime.

●花も嵐も踏み越えて for better or for worse; through fair and foul [thick and thin].

●若いうちが花だ. You're only young once.

・彼は今が盛りの花だ. He is in the glory of his prime.

・あの人もあの頃が花だった. He was in his best days then. | Those were his best days.

・知ってしまえばそれまで, 知らないうちが花. Happiness is [One is better off] not knowing.

7 【花】 〔生け花〕 flower arrangement [arranging].

●お花の先生 a teacher of flower arrangement.

8 〔花札〕 a deck of Japanese playing cards with 12 suits of 4 cards, each suit representing a month of the year signified by a flower.
